Meta Claims That Its Metaverse Ambitions Will Be Impossible To Realize Without Improved Cellular Networks
The metaverse is a catchword that is being marketed as another big thing in technology.
In general, the concept applies to a smooth virtual world in which people can work, shop, and perform with their coworkers, friends, and family.
“Creating a true sense of awareness in virtual worlds supplied to wearable tech and virtual reality headsets are going to require enormous advances in connectivity,” said Mark Zuckerberg, Meta’s founder, and CEO.
Meta, the once Facebook, has stated that its majestic ambition of creating the ultimate “metaverse” will be impossible unless today’s telecom networks undergo significant improvements.
The metaverse is a buzzphrase that is being marketed as another big thing in technology. In general, the concept applies to a seamless simulated world in which people can work, shop, and play with their coworkers, friends, and family.
At the Mobile World Congress tech event on Monday, Dan Rabinovitsj, VP of interconnection at Meta, told CNBC that home routers and cellular networks aren’t yet ready for the metaverse.
“We’re collaborating carefully with our colleagues to figure out what the next step is in terms of innovation,” he said, trying to add that Meta is also collaborating with cellular partners.
While a truthful metaverse does not yet exist, there are some early initiatives in the works that provide an idea of what it’s all about. Oculus VR headsets from Meta have been lauded as an entry point to some of these new metaverse perceptions. However, the experiences necessitate low latency and faster upload and download velocities.
Meta’s founder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, said in a statement Sunday that “creating a genuine sense of awareness in imaginary spaces supplied to smart glasses and VR headsets will require huge advances in connectivity.”
According to Zuckerberg, this will have to be “bigger than any of the large variations we’ve seen before,” with things like broad immersive video streaming necessitating entirely new kinds of networks.
In response, Marc Allera, CEO of BT’s consumer division, told CNBC on Wednesday that he anticipates the metaverse to put a strain on today’s networks. However, he stated that the telecom companies industry is investing billions of dollars in new technology.
